This book is a true story, but Mitchell Zuckoff does an amazing job of telling what reads like a novel that grabs you from the beginning, and I was damn near impossible to put down. Imagine going on a tour of view flyby view of the jungle areas of the world's most beautiful mountain to see an almost hidden, unspoilt valley and then crashing into a mountain and one of the few survivors trying find a solution. But leave or return to base is not easy in a place without roads or paths, only dense rainforest vegetation, a large canopy and vines above and below you. Imagine being injured with open wounds and have to exist in a place that is constantly wet and steaming all sorts of bacteria and fungi and some that do not interrupt. Not even want to think about all the insects and creatures that call this place home. Add to that the stories they've heard of throwing the spear, the native cannibals and wonder how these people do not give up on the spot.

After reading the description of the book and know that it was a rescue and reading about what the outcome was, I was a little worried that the book could not keep my attention. However, do not worry, as soon as I started reading I was fascinated by the amount of detail and how to hold on to the story. Mitchell Zuckoff said he did not take liberties with any of the events, characters, dialogue or a timeline that must have made a double challenge for him to put the diaries, notes, news and news and interviews all together in a way made me feel like if there personally involved with these people.

Besides being a good read, added to my knowledge of the history of the Second World War. With so many battles going on all over the world, New Guinea is not a place you've read a lot about history books about the war. This book tied up much of what was happening in that area with me. There are plenty of characters in this book besides just Zuckoff survivors and gives us the back story on several of the rescuers and the people at base camp and some of the policies of the time. It does so not to interrupt the main action, but rather adds to the vision and makes it much more interesting.

This would be a good book for any fan of the Second World War, history buffs, fans of adventure and action, and indeed anyone who loves a good read. And because one of the main characters in this story is a woman who joined the WAC, I think it would be equally interesting for both men and women. Two thumbs up for this great book that left me blurry eyes this morning after "one more page" kept me awake most of the night to finish it.
