One of the most beautiful books of the year

I read this book in two days flat and I know that if I had time, should be read in one sitting. This is a book that grips you, pulls you and lets a person a little better for having read.
The story is that of Louie Zamperini - a track and field star of the 1930 who participated in the Berlin Olympics, was part of the U.S. Air Forcein the Second World War, was shot down over the sea, was adrift in the Pacific for over a month, was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese forces and eventually made it back to his life and has had the courage to live fully.
Hillenbrand is a wonderful author. He never had the temptation to read Seabiscuit and this was my first introduction to his work. She is one of the few authors who can write a fictional story not in the way more exciting and intense imaginable. Instead of being decorated with flowers or over his prose is based directly on research and testimony of witnesses, and yet manages to not be boring. The story moves quickly takes the reader from beginning Zamperini, its rapid ascent to the track star, Olympic Games in Berlin and after World War II. This is where the story really blossoms. Hillenbrand settles in the long run, and here we see the Air Force and B24 bombers through the words of men who actually took them. The sequences where Zamperini and his friend Phil was adrift at sea are vivid and well described strange. The horrors that await them in Japanese prison camps are not overlooked but not wallow in the gore Hillenbrand and violence as some authors may be tempted to do. There is always a strong sense of the author's relationship applies to men whose story is being allowed to tell.
History has his eyes focused perhaps too exclusively on the war in Europe to the extent that the situation in the Pacific and the situation of prisoners of war has not received the attention and respect they deserve. Hillenbrand's book and a detailed research makes a strong attempt to change that.
Solidly based on statistics and reports from the army on both sides of the war, the book Hillenbrands a clear picture of the hellish conditions that the prisoner of war and suffered the madness of war being waged in the Pacific. This is a difficult story to read but well worth it. The falling apart of the life of Louie and his slow journey to regain his life and sense of purpose is a story that is truly inspiring. This book is a permanent place of honor in my library.
